Rangers refused late bid for Samba

An interesting line from The Mirror to kick off today’s gossip; apparently Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg had a last minute offer rejected last week for Christopher Samba.
QPR only purchased the 28-year-old this January in a £12.75m move from Anzhi Makhachkala but the Hoops could have had an instant profit on their hands had they chosen to sell.
"We had an offer for Samba, right on the deadline and the chairman turned it down. It was for more money than we paid for Samba." Said QPR boss Harry Redknapp.
"The offer was last week - it was a massive offer to take Samba back to Russia. It was in the week that has just gone as the Russian window was still open. It was a big offer.”
The move for Samba seems to have split opinion amongst fans with some saying the club simply can’t afford such ridiculous transfer fees (not to mention £100,000 a week wages) and must look to the future, while others praised the signing as exactly the kind QPR need to make in order to stay in the division.
The Congolese defender has already proved himself invaluable to the R’s relegation battle though. He was outstanding in their crucial 2-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday and adds some much needed solidity to a previously porous backline.
Redknapp clearly agrees Samba is worth a top fee and could be playing at a higher level.
“He is a proper player. When he was sold, I could never understand why Arsenal did not sign him that time. He is everything you need. He is quick, he can play round his feet. He is a proper centre-half. He could play anywhere in this country and for all the top teams." Said Redknapp
