Liverpool join the race for powerhouse midfielder

Like the London Marathon and the rush to be first in line for the Boxing Day sales, the race for Victor Wanyama’s signature was one which didn’t really need another competitor.
However, presumably feeling a bit left out as the big boys battle it out, Liverpool have now joined the chase says The Daily Telegraph.
Apparently, Brendan Rodgers has been extensively scouting the Celtic midfielder, who looks set to move south this summer with Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton and, interestingly, Sunderland (good luck with that one guys) all very much interested.
Wanyama fits the Red’s transfer policy of snapping up young talent, but is he really the player they need? Liverpool are not short on centre-mids and if they can keep Lucas fit already have one of the league’s best defensive midfielders on their books.
It is centre-back where the problems seem to lie right now and although Wanyama can cover there it is not his best position. Rodgers would probably be better off spending £10m on a recognised centre back with plenty of experience playing in that position.
Jamie Carragher is retiring at the end of the season and after a number of dreadful performances Martin Skrtel could well be on his way as well. This would leave Liverpool terribly short on experienced centre-halves and as talented as he is, Wanyama doesn’t really fit the bill.
