City and PSG could join the race for Varane

Raphael Varane may not be someone you had heard much about until pretty recently. He had been slowly, if unspectacularly been working his way into the Real Madrid team for the past couple of seasons, that is until a stunning performance against Barcelona in last week’s Clasico thrust him firmly into the limelight.
I’m sure that Europe’s top clubs were probably already aware of the 19-year-old who had been building a reputation as a composed centre back with the ability to snuff out danger before it arises rather than relying on heroic last ditch goal line blocks – the anti John Terry if you will. But his goalscoring Classico performance has now alerted the press to the possibility that we might have quite some player on our hands here. The Express are reporting that Manchester City could now join the race to sign the Frenchman - a race which seemingly only involves them and PSG at present - to replace Joleon Lescott who looks set to leave the Etihad this summer.
Quite why Real Madrid would let one of world football hottest defences prospects leave at the age of 19 is not explained by the paper though. Presumably, if he goes to City, it’ll be down to the healthy relationship between Roberto Mancini and Jose Mourinho… Oh.
