Henry begs for fans to have faith

The start to the 2012/13 season as pretty much started as a disaster for Liverpool having taken one point in three games and sit 18th in the league. Maybe the solution was to spend money on plenty of new players to boost the squad?

No was the answer from Fenway Sports Group and owner John W Henry as the club brought in only four players over the summer, two of which are unheard of. The lack of strength in debt the club now doesn’t have has sparked much debate between fans.

The debate of the fans has been heard in the directors area of the club as early this week Mr Henry took time to pencil out a letter to explain to fans, and those connected with Liverpool FC why and, how the club are going to be successful with a squad that consists of only two strikers.

Mr Henry’s intentions sound all good and well in a world where football is simple and success is guaranteed but in today’s reality it looks as though Liverpool have got to start, practically again to become the team they once were. Mr Henry has warned the fans that risky spending can be disastrous. Maybe the club should have realised that before spending nearly £103 million on five players.

With the new law UEFA are intending to bring in on clubs making sure they break even or in profit, the American owners at Anfield seem to be doing their best to meet the targets set by UEFA.

However capping spending and bringing through youngsters won’t bring in immediate success, especially whilst the rest of the Premiership’s big clubs treat the transfer windows like a Career Mode on FIFA, buying as many players as possible for any price.

Mr Henry has also backed the decision to loan out Carroll without bringing in a replacement such as Clint Dempsey or Daniel Sturridge (the two strikers Liverpool were linked with on deadline day). Whether or not that decision will prove to be right depends on the outcome of the rest of the season.

There is one thing for sure this set of American owners certainly has the club’s history and existence at interest and believe this is important.

If Mr Henry is going to concentrate on making the club a financially stable club for years to come then transfer money will have to be capped and therefore trophies and regular Champions League football may have to wait. The question is how long are the fans going to have faith and believe in this strategy?
