Chamakh to Spurs.....you better believe it

The week preceding the transfer deadline provides journalists with an opportunity to ramp up the hype machine to 11 and roll out a barrage of transfer rumours across all different types of media. The day itself is something to behold, too, with Sky Sports giving it the Hollywood treatment.
Anyway, these rumours tend to have some truth to them but, more often than not, they are completely ridiculous and simply used to fill column space. Case in point, it was reported in the Mirror earlier this week that Arsenal striker Marouanne Chamakh was in line for a loan switch to Spurs. Now, anyone who has followed Chamakh’s time at Arsenal will know that, after a good start, the Moroccan has developed a strange allergy to the penalty area, scoring just twice in the past two seasons.
It is common knowledge to Arsenal fans that Chamakh’s time at the club is over and the best thing for the player is to ply his trade elsewhere but are Spurs crazy enough to take a risk on him? Or perhaps we are looking at one of the shrewdest bits of transfer business ever done by Arsene Wenger? Loaning a player who is totally ineffective to your local rivals in an attempt to eliminate a possible rival for the Champions League spots? Yes, I can see Wenger thinking it over now and putting it forward to the board, imploring someone to ring Andre Villas Boas immediately to see if he will take the bait. Maybe this is what football will become in the coming years, teams trying to outsmart their opponents in the transfer market by goading them into taking a crap player of their hands.
As far as rumours go, this is surely one of the best from the summer. I am looking forward to seeing what the tabloids can muster up next.
