3 way fight for Van Der Wiel

Ajax right-back Gregory Van Der Wiel can be not too dis-heartened about advanced talks with Valencia breaking down, as plenty of other parties remain interested in the young Dutch defender.

Unless Van Der Wiel fancied the sunny shores of Eastern Spain of course, but he is a man very much in demand, with the Metropolis of Chelsea, the cultural haven of Rome and the artistic climb of Madrid all potential destinations for the current Ajax defender.

That is according to Talksport who report that Roma, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all interested in going where Valencia failed in trying to convince the EreDivisie winning 24 year old to join them, who apparently fancies a new challenge away from Amsterdam.

The energetic full-back, who has 25 caps for the Netherlands and is in Bert Van Maarwijk’s squad for this summer’s European Championships, has had to deny to Football Italia, several reports in Italian media calling a deal to Roma has been completed.

That is all nonsense to Van Der Wiel, who says he remains focused on Poland and Ukraine this summer, but admits he doesn’t know where he will be playing next summer.

Talksport go on to say that Chelsea’s interest in the defender has cooled slightly this year as he has had to deal with injuries and a dip in form, although a decent European Championship may get him a golden ticket to Stamford Bridge next season.

However, Italian media group CalcioMercato say that Madrid newspaper Marca has spoken of renewed interest in the defender by Jose Mourinho and his merry group of men down at the Bernabeu and also Roma, who haven’t given up the fight for the player who is valued between £9 million and £10 million Euros.
