Sir Alex Ferguson and his winger collection

People can, and indeed very often do, collect all manner of things; stamps, coins, stuffed teddy bears, match reports about their clubs, airline spoons, Soviet calculators, belly button lint. You name it and someone is probably collecting it, regrettably.

The collecting phase Sir Alex Ferguson is going through right now would appear to be young-ish, inconsistent wingers. All things considered, by which I mean go back to that list and really take it in, there are innumerable things which are far worse that a man in his 70s could be collecting.

Not content with having a Nani, an Ashley Young and an Antonio Valencia to add to his collection alongside his somewhat neglected Park Ji-Sung and an aged but very well preserved Ryan Giggs, Ferguson is casting out his net on a stick to snag another specimen of his desire.

His latest target for the annual summer hunt, according to Talksport, is Benfica winger Nico Gaitan with Ferguson having kept his binoculars on this particular case for a year or so now.

The 24 year old, who can also play through the middle of the park, has already been the subject of a £16m bid from United. Now, Talksport are reporting that the Portuguese newspaper Record had splashed across its front page a story claiming that a second bid has been made in the region of £20m for the Argentine.

The Talksport story goes on to say that Ferguson wants to broker a deal as soon as possible with, utterly predictably, Manchester City also hovering around in the background. Roberto Mancini has just as an impressive collection of wingers as his United counterpart and would appear to be wanting to add to his own collection.

      The hunt is on.
