Del Piero: Liverpool made me an offer

Alessandro Del Piero has revealed that Liverpool made him an offer over the summer following his summer release from Juventus. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Italy star admits that he had the chance to move to Anfield, but turned down the opportunity due to the memories of the Heysel tragedy.

39 Juventus fans died 27 years ago after a wall collapsed following rioting of the European Cup final in Belgium. Both clubs have gone to great lengths to heal the wounds of that fateful day, but Del Piero insists he couldn’t sign for the Merseysiders following the tragedy.

The 37-year-old instead opted to sign for Hyundai A League outfit Sydney FC, but has revealed he is finding it difficult to adjust to his new surroundings after 19 years with the Turin giants.
