Well, I discussed it last week and the results are finally in! The winners of the week’s most exciting UEFA World Cup qualifiers were determined yesterday.
To kick-start a new series focused on less popular leagues whose players could be of use to a Premier League side, I'm first looking at the Ukrainian Premier League, which is perhaps overlooked by many despite having a good pool of talent. Shakhtar Donetsk are one of the most famous teams in this division and proved to Chelsea last season that they are no pushovers. Dynamo Kiev are also up and coming in European football. Here's my list:
Unfortunately for all of us football fans, all domestic leagues are on hold yet again this weekend for International play. Some are just friendlies, but there are still a few juicy world cup qualifiers to look forward to. For UEFA, on Friday, France is playing the Ukraine while Portugal will be matched up against Sweden. Both sides will also meet again on Tuesday to finish up this playoff round. So the question is why am I to be excited about this?
The sight of team-mates not agreeing on something is not a rare on in football.
Following another night of enthralling qualification action across Europe on Friday, we outline who moved a step further to qualification.
The Ukranian Premier League is the source for my choice of goal of the week. Namely, a match between Chernomorets Odessa and Tavriya (nope, I have never heard of them either) in a bottom of the table tussle.
The Ukrainian league might not be classed as that obscure anymore and there are certainly some world-class players that play for the top clubs, notably Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev. One 23-year-old is setting a blistering pace for others trying to make a name for themselves in what can be a difficult league.
The media, much like fans, are fickle. After England had seen off what could only really be described as a mediocre pub team in Moldova last Friday, the world and his wife was ready to anoint Tom Cleverley as the future of England’s midfield.
With the Olympic Games hogging all the space in the papers this past week, one far more important football news story has ended being given far less fanfare than it deserves.
