Manchester United Will Gain Confidence After Bayern Defeat, But Will It Be Enough?

It has happened, it has come to pass; Bayern Munich's incredible 53 game unbeaten run came to end at the hands of Augsburg in Bundesliga this weekend.

Bayern's dominance of the past two years in Germany has been staggering as they wrapped up the league in record time at the end of last month, with seven games to spare. Manager Pep Guardolia, with one eye firmly on Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Manchester United, rested a number of first team starters and Augsburg took full advantage as they continued their fine season.

Whilst this defeat bears no significance on Bayern's domestic campaign, does this blip offer David Moyes and Manchester United a glimmer of hope in advancing to Champions League semi-final at the Bavarian's expense?

United will be buoyed by the determined showing they produced in the first leg at Old Trafford where they were able to hang on to a 1-1 draw thanks to Nemanja Vidic's header.

Moyes' team were resolute in their defending as Bayern dominated possession but if United are able to score another goal from a set piece at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday then it change the momentum of the tie. Of course, the odds are heavily stacked against them as Bayern have imperious home form and Guardiola's team talk is already written following this weekend's defeat.

As we all know, however, anything is possible in cup competitions, and the stage might just be set for Manchester United to pull off what would be the biggest shock of the season in Europe.
