Why Arsenal Fans Should Be Excited About Duo Signing Contracts

Arsenal recently confirmed that Germany defender Per Mertesacker and midfield stalwart Tomas Rosicky have signed new, extended contracts to keep them at The Emirates.  A happy Arsene Wenger said “they are players of exceptional quality and experience.  They have consistently proved themselves at the highest level”.

The news of German born Mertesacker extending his stay at the club will be welcoming to a lot of Arsenal fans who may fear that another season without any silverware will see their prized assets walk away in search of greater things.  The centre-back has featured 39 times for Arsenal this season and has played a pivotal role alongside Laurent Koscienly in the heart of the Arsenal defence. 

This will now, probably, rubber stamp a move away from The Emirates for former captain and Arsenal favourite, Thomas Vermaelen, who will surely be open to new offers from a host of clubs in the summer.

It will be interesting to see which other Arsenal player will sign new contracts before the start of next season, as Arsene Wenger continues to build his squad. 

At 33, Rosicky will no doubt be a relieved man to know his future is certain, for the foreseeable time at least.  Personally, Arsenal are blessed with enough technically gifted players in the middle of the park, but it’s their lack of scoring power up front that worries me.  Wenger needs to dig deep into his pockets to seek another striker this summer.
