Why Wenger Must Retire At The End Of The Season

Arsene Wenger has been rumoured to have held crisis talks with his squd after Saturday's humiliating 6-0 defeat to Chelsea, but here's why I believe Wenger's time at Arsenal has come to an end. He needs to do the decent thing and resign.

Wenger has been in charge of the Gunner's since 1996 and the first 10 seasons of his Arsenal career were superb. He created some of the best players the Premier League had ever seen. The likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Pires and Vieira were simply sublime and an integral part of Arsenal's three league titles, including the unforgettable invincables season in 2003-2004. Add four FA Cup victories to that and the opening decade of his tenure was brilliant.

The style of football was, and has been brilliant to watch, but since the 2005 FA Cup triumph and reaching the 2006 Champions League Final, there has been no silverware. Wenger was an integral figure in the building of the Emirates Stadium and has finished in the top four for 16 successive seasons. However, selling their best players to rivals, such as Fabregas, Clichy, van Persie have severley weakened the squad.

Despite this, Arsenal have had opportunities to win trophies. The 2011 Carling Cup was a glorious chance, but they failed. Arsenal have been credited for regular top four finishes, but they are a bigger club than that. If that's what satisfies the fans, then Arsenal have gone backwards as a club.

To add, Wenger has failed to lift Arsenal to the top of their Champions League Group in the last four seasons, resulting in consecutive last 16 defeats to both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, twice.

The results and performances in the games against the top four this season have been awful. Conceding 17 goals in three away games has been a disaster and another clear indication that Wenger has not progressed Arsenal in the last nine years.

I firmly believe his time is up at Arsenal. They need a new direction, a new set of ideas to bring Arsenal back to where they belong. He has been brilliant for the game and his legacy will live on at Arsenal for years and years.

The perfect way for him to depart would be with a FA Cup trophy at the end of this season.
