BAGGAGE: Chelsea Need To Get Rid Of This Midfielder

Chelsea strengthened the centre of their midfield in January with the signing of Nemanja Matic from Benfica. The Serbian international has added stability and a calming assurance in front of an impenetrable back four. His arrival has cast doubts on the future of John Obi Mikel, though, who still has three years on his current contract with the Blues.

The Stamford Bridge outfit managed to secure the signature of Obi Mikel in 2006 when they beat off competition from Manchester United to sign the Nigerian youngster. The midfielder is now 26 years of age and has not justified the £16 million fee that the club shelled out for him. Ironically Jose Mourinho was the man in charge when Mikel joined the club.

I think Chelsea need to cut their losses and accept Mikel is never going to have a significant influence at Stamford Bridge. The Nigerian makes too many square passes in games and although he may retain possession, he is rarely the instigator of any Chelsea attacks. Mikel has only netted one league goal in the eight years he has been at the club which highlights further the impact Matic has already had on attacking proceedings.

The 25-year-old has already come close to scoring for Chelsea on several occasions. He had a goal disallowed at Villa Park and provided an assist in Saturday’s 6-0 annihilation of Arsenal. Matic also has the maturity to cope with the unpredictable but undoubtedly talented David Luiz. For a player who cost £16 million and was in the middle of a tug-of-war between two Premier League heavyweights, I would have expected much more from Obi Mikel.

For me, it’s time for him to go.
