Moyes In: Why Manchester United Need To Be Patient With Under-Pressure Manager

For all of the negative press David Moyes has received since he took over the realms at Manchester United, I think the Scotsman needs to be cut some slack.  Here’s why.

United went through to the next round of the Champions League last night beating Greek side Olympiakos 3-2 on aggregate.  This competition remains their last hope for what has been a faltering season.

Yes, performances and results this season have not been acceptable, notably the embarrassing 3-0 home loss to title rivals Liverpool, but Manchester United are a team in transition.  Pure and simple.

Sir Alex Ferguson spent over 20 years building an empire at Manchester United, but many forget that even Sir Alex Ferguson was in trouble after just one season with the club.  The rest is now history.

When the ‘chosen one’ was appointed last summer, I pictured a similar scenario that occurred at Leeds United in the 70’s when Brian Clough was assigned the near impossible task of taking over from Don Revie who was adored by the Leeds fans and players alike.

Clough’s tenure as manager was swiftly cut short and was quickly released by the club.  To their dismay, he went on to manage Nottingham Forest to two European cup titles.

The same situation could arise for Moyes but the United board and fans need to keep faith.  The likes of van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck and Juan Mata can make United a force to be reckoned with once again.

Patience is a virtue and United need plenty of it.
