Chelsea Made A Mistake Letting Lukaku Leave - Tonight Could Be A Sharp Reminder

Didier Drogba returning to Chelsea tonight highlights the only disappointing aspect of the Blues' seasons so far - the failure to have a top quality centre-forward in the side.

With this, Chelsea would surely be storming the league this year and have a much greater chance in Europe. As it stands Liverpool and Man City could very feasibly, on current form, both finish above Chelsea this season. Arsenal are in the hunt for the title, too.

The bizarre thing about this situation is that Chelsea not only could, and should, have bought a striker in the summer, or in January, but also that they let one of their best forwards join Everton on loan - Romelu Lukaku.

It’s a decision which could cost Chelsea, as I would rank Lukaku above Ba, Schurrle and Torres in form right now. And a season under Mourinho would have inevitably helped his progression. It would have also given the Chelsea boss a chance to take a closer look at him during the season.

Lukaku is a player with strength, skill and finishing ability. Very similar to Drogba in style, which is why the irony will be palpable in the air at Stamford Bridge should Drogba score and knock Chelsea out of Europe tonight, knowing that Chelsea had a striker with similar attributes, yet squandered the opportunity to use him this year.

A decision which, despite Mourinho's decent season so far, could turn into a trophy less season. Unbelievably, a consequence all of their own making.
