Agger Do: Liverpool Defence Key To Overcoming Manchester United Threat

I for one am very excited for this Sunday’s match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Old Trafford. It’s always an exciting clash between these two sides and this weekend will be no different.

Liverpool are currently 2nd in the Premier League table, while Manchester United are sitting in a very disappointing 6th place. Though Liverpool will be travelling to Manchester for the match, I really feel as if they will have the advantage heading into the tie, and I would put my money on Liverpool to get the three points. United obviously will not take this match lightly, however, Liverpool have been impressive and are talented enough to defeat the Red Devils.

One thing that Liverpool must do to prevail is to make sure that their defence is top notch. United have been struggling as of late in front of goal. Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, to name just two, haven’t been delivering like they have been in the past.

Following on from that, Liverpool’s backline is probably their weakest spot. The Reds' frontmen are on fire - they’ve been scoring freely and have notched the most goals in the Premier League. I think that if Liverpool do slip up on Sunday, it’s going to be at the fault of the defence, as the front pairing of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have performed in every tie.

Liverpool have, for the most part, been consistent in their back four, which I think is a really good thing. Martin Skrtel is a permanent part of the Liverpool defence and has been for many years. He’s always been one of my favorites and even has his part in scoring goals at times; he scored this season in the match against Arsenal.

He’ll have to keep an eye on van Persie and Rooney this weekend, or at least I think that's the pair who will be starting. Van Perise is known to sprint past opponents and score his goals down the middle, so as long as Skirtel and his fellow defenders, hopefully Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger, and John Flanagan, my favorite Liverpool back four, are alert, United will find it hard to score goals.

Jose Enrique and Kolo Toure are two Liverpool defenders that I also admire. However, the four that I mentioned previously have been Brenden Rodgers' pick for the past few weeks and the quartet have been working well together.

Consistancy is something that is necessary to have in any defence, especially when playing Manchester United at their place. Enrique has been plagued by injury this season and it’s been tough for Toure to find a permanent first team position because of his shoddy form.

Liverpool have what it takes to beat Manchester United this weekend but it will be their defence that holds the key. It will not be an easy match, by no means. Nobody comes to Old Trafford and has it easy, especially bitter rivals Liverpool. However, if there was a time that they could really prove that they have what it takes to win the title, this match would be it.
