Torres Injury Is A Blessing In Disguise For Chelsea - Here's Why

To say Fernando Torres has not justified the £50 million that Chelsea splashed out to land the Spanish striker from Liverpool in 2011 would be quite the understatement. The 29-year-old has found the back of the net just nine times in all competitions this season for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

His season took another turn for the worse on Saturday when he pulled out of Chelsea’s clash with Tottenham after suffering a groin injury in the warm up. Blues manager Jose Mourinho has stated that he expects Torres to be sidelined for a couple of weeks at the very least.

To add insult to injury, his replacement Samuel Eto’o scored the opener before Chelsea’s other out and out striker Demba Ba added two goals late on in the 4-0 win.

Mourinho will be delighted to have seen two of his front men get on the scoresheet as that has not happened enough this season. Galatasaray and Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge next week and this will give the Blues boss a welcome selection headache ahead of two home games that could define their season.

Both Eto’o and Ba will know that one or the other will be picked in the upcoming games, and this will provide further motivation for them to lay claim to a permanent starting berth.

Self-confidence for any forward is priceless – even for a man that cost £50 million. Torres has been completely bereft of confidence for the majority of the season and this latest setback will play perfectly into the hands of the self-anointed Special One.
