Midfield The Key For Liverpool In Southampton Clash

Liverpool's trip to Southampton this weekend could prove to be one of their toughest tests of the season. Inconsistency springs to mind when you look at the Reds' form on the road, and you'd be forgiven for being unsure what expect when they visit St Mary's. In hopes to maintain their solid six point lead in the race for a Champions League place, it's the midfield where Liverpool will need to be on top of their game.

After slip ups already against the likes of Newcastle and West Brom on the road this season, the home side shouldn't be underestimated, which is why a midfield trio of Steven Gerrard, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson should safely, but surely, do the job on Saturday evening.

Liverpool's 5-0 demolition of Spurs at White Hart Lane was down to the tremendous energy and pressing of Henderson, Allen and Lucas Leiva in the absence of the injured talisman Gerrard. Swap the skipper for the currently-injured Lucas, and Liverpool have a similar, if not more capable midfield, to run the show against Southampton.

A front three of Coutinho, Suarez and Sturridge would leave Raheem Sterling, whose form has been incredible of late, with a place on the bench. This could, however, prove to be a blessing in disguise as the pace and agility of Sterling would help break down the 7th best defence in the league, should he be introduced late on.

Should Rodgers stick with this midfield then Liverpool will surely run Southampton ragged and prove they are in fact the dark horses in this year's race for the Premier League title.
