Why Chelsea Interest In Midfielder Could Pave Way For Mikel Exit

Chelsea are reported to be interested in 21-year-old Belgian midfielder Giannelli Imbula, from French side Marseille, with the means to come in as a long term replacement to John Obi Mikel, who at 26, would represent a bargain for a host of other European clubs come the end of the season.

With recent injuries affecting Mikel’s chances of playing for ‘The Blues’  this term and the emergence of Ramires and Oscar partnering in midfield, whose performances have helped take Chelsea to the top of the Premier League, life has been squeezed out of the Nigerian international at Stamford Bridge.

So which clubs will sit forward, hoping to grab a bargain for a player who has won every domestic honour in England and a Champions League medal under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea?

A move to Turkish side, Galatasaray last summer apparently fell through at the last minute as both clubs failed to agree personal terms, but the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool are rumoured to be interested in the player who could offer the strength in depth they need to add to their squads.

Arsene Wenger has been long term admirer of Mikel Obi and would be an excellent addition to the Arsenal squad as cover to Mathieu Flamini.

Jose Mourinho has always been reluctant to sell his players to other rivals in the Premier League which as a result could see Mikel Obi play his trade overseas next season.
