Is Ter Stegen The Right Man To Replace Valdes At Barcelona?

Spanish paper Marca has reported that Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen has passed a ‘secret’ medical at Barcelona, but is he what Barcelona need right now?

It has been the second worst kept secret transfer in German football behind Robert Lewandowski’s move to Bayern Munich, but it looks as if the deal is just about done.

Ter Stegen will swap Borussia Park for the Camp Nou in the summer with long standing goalkeeper Victor Valdes heading for the exit door.

The 21 year-old German will move for a reported €9 million and has signed a contract which runs until 2019.

Ter Stegen has been ever present between the posts for Monchengladbach this season, keeping six clean sheets in 22 league matches.

He is a more than capable keeper but has a lot to learn and is still prone to an error now and again, as are most young goalkeepers.

Which begs the question. Should Barcelona not look to a more experienced goalkeeper, especially with the team struggling to deal with transitional period following Guardiola and Vilanova’s departure?

I do believe that Ter Stegen will be one of the best goalkeepers in the world in a few years and perhaps Germany’s number one.

However, he will find a lot of pressure heaped on his young shoulders if the team is still not clicking and he makes a mistake or two.
