Is It Time Manchester United Dropped Ryan Giggs? The Statistics

With nearly 1000 appearances for Manchester United, 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues, Ryan Giggs has installed himself as a football legend. His weaving runs and deadly delivery has seen him establish himself as a true great in the English game, but at the age of 39 - 40 this year - is it time that United drop him to the bench?

United have a wealth of talent on the wings, including the likes of Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Wilfried Zaha and Nani, but as Giggs' legs have started to decrease in pace and energy, he;s been shifted into a central role.

Last season Giggs was largely a bit-part player under Sir Alex Ferguson, playing just 10 full games and a further 12 appearances either appearing as a substitute or leaving the field before the full time whistle.

He claimed just three assists and scored twice, winning 50% of his 22 take-ons and hitting the target with just 30% of his 10 shots.

This season, under David Moyes, the former Wales captain is apparently seen as a key player in the side. Giggs has played in all three games so far, although he's not played a whole 90 minutes yet, and has mustered just one key pass.

His duels won has dropped to 36% and he looks desperately uncomfortable when relied upon in the United midfield. His 72% pass accuracy is the lowest in the entire out-field squad, apart from Nani, and he has looked hugely disappointing, in my opinion.

For me, with Shinji Kagawa is rusting his backside to the bench, it's time to let Giggs sink into retirement. There is no reason why he can't play a part into the current season, but there are far better options for Moyes at present.

I think MU should use Giggs only as a sub. If he comes on at the start, he has to pace himself to last at least 60 mins. He can come on and make a difference, especially when chasing a goal, but MU should not expect him to anchor a game. He's too old for that, but he can come on and change a game.

Giggs was a shadow of his past against Liverpool !!! I have always been a fan of Giggs but father time has caught on to an absolute brilliant player !!! Should be used in last twenty minutes of a game , as his experience is invaluable !!! Kagawa shoul be moulded to take over from Giggs as this ,as I do believe was one of the reasons Sir Alex signed him !!!

Great player and servant, but needs to be honest with himself and pack itbin now and concentrate on the coaching.
So wasteful in the final third, as displayed on sunday, it was painfully frustrating.
I'm quite concerned Moyes seems to want to keep his coach happy with plenty of playing time, yet neglecting one of europes best in Kagawa.

Don't understand the need Moyes has to suck up to Giggs by playing him in every game while neglecting Kagawa. Perhaps Moyes feels so small at such a big club that he needs that security blanket of ex-Everton staff and Giggs. This is why we needed Klopp, not Moyes, a brilliant coach with all the confidence needed to lead clubs as big as Man United. Unless Moyes has a seismic shift in his mindset, United will suffer. How about it SAF, why don't you give Moyes a call, please.
