5 marquee signings Arsenal should make in January

We've barely finished the summer transfer window and already rumours are flying around suggesting that Arsene Wenger has been given permission to sign one big name player in January. The press have already linked us with Marco Reus, Ilkay Gundogan and Lars Bender. However, they seemed very unlikely in the summer so think about the response in January when it becomes even harder to sign players. Nevertheless, it's fun to speculate about who Arsenal could sign. The five players, however unrealistic they are, must not be taken as an actual transfer rumour. Having said that, Arsenal have probably been linked with all of them at some point. As is the norm with the Gunners.

First up is Marco Reus. Around £30- £40 million is what is being quoted by papers around the world in regards to the amount of money needed to sign him. Unrealistic you may say. My response is Mesut Ozil. How unrealistic was that transfer rumour a couple of days before deadline day? Very. True, the circumstances are different but has the signing of Ozil changed the opinions of big name players around the world? Probably, perhaps Reus is secretly hoping Arsenal make a move for him. Considering that he does support the north Londoners and his role model is Tomas Rosicky, and not to mention the German influence in the team. With all that in mind, any rumour now has to be believed.

Second is Robert Lewandowski. The Poland international looked set to join Bayern Munich when his contract expires in the summer of 2014 but recent reports suggest that he is far from joining the champions of Europe. Perhaps this is an opportunity to pounce. Arsenal need a striker and Lewandowski is the big name signing that Arsenal possibly need to fire them further in the right direction. Maybe Szczesny's big personality may have a say in this transfer?

Toni Kroos is the third. As is with all these players, he is a regular for Bayern Munich at the moment but the arrival of Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara may force the German out the team. This is where Arsenal do business the best. A phone call from Wenger and you can bet your bottom dollar that the player will be on the next flight to London. I mean, it worked with Ozil. Perhaps Mertesacker and Podolski may be able to work their magic again. Expensive? Of course. Quality? A resounding yes.

Juan Mata is the fourth option. Fans want him played, Mourinho prefers him on the bench. Whose going to win that battle? Mourinho of course, so that's where Mata will remain. Maybe it's finally time for Wenger to land his long term target.

The final option is Luis Suarez. Why not? Why not go after the player we spent nearly all summer trying to land. It's worth a punt at least, if we're still in the Champions League it would mean we've progressed so he could take that into consideration. The only stumbling block is Real Madrid and whether or not they make a bid. If they do, we can just go after Karim Benzema. Win-win situation.

why not give Lewondowisk a try. i don't Dortmund would like to see him move to Bayer n for free. Give him a good package and am sure he will come to Arsenal.

We are getting a bit carried away because as the logic goes: Wenger sighed Ozil, so he's now ready to break the habits of a lifetime. Err No! Wenger paid for Ozil by spending virtually nothing on his other 'targets' and even then he had to be bullied into parting with the cash by a board who feared a fans' revolt. There's zero chance that he's go out and spend another £30M to £40M in January.

That said, if we're talking fantasy targets here then any of the above would be fantastic for Arsenal. But there's more chance of Bale going back to Sp*rs than there is of AW making a serious attempt to sign them.

What really made me laugh was the idea that going for Karim Benzema was a 'win-win situation'. The guy has scored 1 goal in his last 26 competitive internationals. As another blogger recently said: 'he's 'overweight, overpriced and overrated". I couldn't agree more.
