Lukas Podolski or Angel Di Maria? The Statistics

Arsenal have their season back on track, winning their tie with Fulham 3-1 on Saturday. The star of the show was the Gunner's German forward Lukas Podolski, scoring twice, but it got some fans discussing his future in north London. Arsene Wenger is said to be on the tail of Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, but with Podolski currently patrolling the left flank, we take a look as to who deserves the spot.

Podolski has the pace, but Di Maria has the skill. The former made 33 appearance in the Premier League last season but completed just two games, which undoubtedly sparked frustration. Di Maria had a similar tenure at Madrid last term, playing 32 games, but completing just seven.

Podolski, who is traditionally a frontman, scored 11 goals in those appearances, while wide-man Di Maria hit seven. Although they are different types of players, Olivier Giroud has forced his colleague to the wing. However, it hasn't had an effect on his goalscoring.

Podolski scored a brace against Fulham this weekend, completed 90% of his passes and won 100% of his duels. Di Maria has only 22 minutes of football this season, so it would be unfair to compare their campaigns at present.

So, back to last season, and we see the Argentine surpassed Podolski in chances created - 45 to 31 - but fell short on almost every other aspect.

With Podolski, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Santi Cazorla all able to function in the wide areas, the money would be spent in better areas of the squad.

Some are talking about Podolski leaving if Di Maria arrives. I say that is rubbish.

Firstly it is always prudent to have cover for injuries. Especially in our squad as we seem prone to knocks.

Secondly I believe Poldi would be first choice, with Di Maria as an option off the bench. Or if Giroud needs a break Lucas can move to the centre with Di Maria ready in reserve. Previously the Ox could fill in, but we don't want to have to rush him back from a delicate knee injury.

Lastly, I think Podolski has a great spirit within the team. His interaction with the fans is first class, and Arsenal would be a weaker team without him.

    Di Maria any day!
