Why It Would Be Unwise To Question Manchester United's Title Credentials

Business as usual, then, for Manchester United this past weekend, as they negotiated a pretty tricky away trip to Swansea by overpowering the Swans - coming out 4-1 victors at the Liberty Stadium.

Naturally, Robin van Persie bagged himself a couple of goals and, bizarrely, Danny Welbeck scored twice too, the second a sumptuous chip over Michel Vorm.

With the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson and the subsequent appointment of David Moyes, there have been murmurs that it will be a couple of years until United reach the heights of the past decade. Critics point to Moyes' inexperience in such a large role and the fact he has not had success in Europe.

There is no denying this but people are also quick to forget that this is Manchester United, one of the biggest football clubs on the entire planet, and they have not lost any key members of the team that won the league at a canter last season.

Another criticism is their lack of a world class midfielder, something Moyes addressed in his attempt to lure Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona. Fabregas, however, is not budging and it will not be lost on Moyes that there is still a great need to provide his midfield with a touch of class.

United have had bids for Everton's Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines rejected and, with the transfer window coming to a close, it is hard to envisage United not being active over the next ten days or so.

It would not be in United's interests to sell Wayne Rooney either, especially not to Chelsea, and unless a very large bid comes in for the England international there is not a large possibility of him moving.

The performance against Swansea displayed just what a good side United remain and those who speak of their demise this season would be unwise to right them off. Remember, too, that Ferguson has not completely disappeared and will be keeping a close eye on proceedings, lending his power and influence where and when it is needed.

Chelsea and Manchester City have significant firepower at their disposal but United are still the team to beat, the reigning champions, and make no mistake they will not be pushovers.
