Simon Mignolet or Pepe Reina? A closer look

With the news filtering through football news pages that Liverpool’s early flurry of transfer business is an will continue with the signing of Belgium stopper Simon Mignolet, with a reported £8 million bid nearing acceptance from Sunderland.

While Di Canio’s Sunderland will lose a very talented and promising keeper, Liverpool will be further adding to their ranks, with Kolo Toure and Iago Aspas already signing up for the Merseyside club, Mignolet will add completion and a more youthful touch, now whether the signing of the Belgium spells the end for Reina, is up for debate, as several clubs have been sniffing around the Spaniard, including Barcelona. So providing the deal does come to fruition, Mignolet will probably be Liverpool’s primary shot stopper, it would be ludicrous to spend £8 million on a player and leave him on the bench, surely? Well it is Liverpool, Andy Carroll anyone.

Since joining the Wearside club, Mignolet has gone on to rack up over 100 appearances and garner high praise and after a less than impressive season by The Black Cats, he was one of the only players to come out of it with any sort of praise. So with the move for the Belgian nearing, there still are several outcomes and possibilities needing to be addressed. Who will be the Liverpool number one next season?  Whether it’s Pepe Reina starting in between the sticks or the new Belgian, will they be competing against one another to guard the Anfield net. With Liverpool’s smart and tactical approach to bringing in a more youthful, cheaper player seems to be the Rodgers way and it looks to be continuing with the move for Mignolet.
