Why Carrick's Injury Could Prove To Be A Blessing In Disguise For Manchester United

Manchester United fans have been used to Michael Carrick pulling the strings in midfield over the past few years. The Englishmen was sat alongside Paul Scholes last season as the two dictated United to a Premier League trophy. However, with Scholes now retired and Tome Cleverley and Marouane Fellaini the only two options to work beside, life doesn't look as rosy for the 33-year-old. But the mettle of the latter two is set to be tested as Carrick has been ruled out with an Achilles injury.

I know what United fans are thinking. Our title chances are over. How are we supposed to win anything with our feeble midfield now?

However, I feel losing Carrick until the new year could be a blessing in disguise for the Red Devils.

It means that Cleverley and Fellaini have to step up. The pair have found it difficult to impress many so far, but with the added importance they will have no choice. It would spark some impressive form from the duo, and when Carrick returns he has two rejuvinated players to play with.

If it fails, then Cleverley can be flogged in the January transfer window.

It also give Phil Jones the chance to step in and take control of the midriff. The chunky defender has been brilliant when slotted into the anchorman role and it gives us a whole other outlook.

It's hopeful thinking, I agree, but I am ever the optimist.
