Are we still having the Messi debate? (Video)

On Monday night, Lionel Messi made history. Again. The pint sized Argentinean picked up his fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or award in a year that the Barcelona front-man broke numerous individual records, including raising the barometer for the most goals scored in a calender year – 91.

It's an astonishing feat for the 25-year-old, who despite his young age is already the leading goalscorer in the history of the Blaugrana. Yet, there are those that believe Messi didn't deserve to pick up the individual accolade in Zurich at the beginning of the week.

The Argentine was up against teammate Andres Iniesta and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who it can be argued would've picked up the award had Messi not broken Gerd Muller's goalscoring record late last year.

Nevertheless, regardless of the extremely high standards the Barcelona star has set, debate rages on as to whether he is the best in the world. There are some that choose to overlook his exploits for club and country, hinting that his Portuguese counterpart usurps him as the world's best.

As far as many are concerned, however, there is no contest – Messi trumps all those before him, no matter the quality of those around him. It's a shame for Ronaldo, who would comfortably have picked up the accolade had the Barca star not been in his pomp at this point in history.

Unfortunately for the Real star, it's the simple matter is just that bit better, unstoppable if you will. As fair as I, and many others, are concerned, there is no debate as to who the best player in the world is at the moment and that man is Lionel Messi.

Love to see Messi win such an award playing in the EPL... Would never happen. At least Ronaldo has the balls to move leagues to test himself!
