United don’t need Modric

After Chelsea announced the signing of Eden Hazard, Manchester United looked to make their first movement of the summer transfer and did so by bringing in Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund. At £16m, he may have cost half of what Hazard cost the Blues and whilst he may be a gamble, his stats certainly don’t lie with an impressive 86 goals and 45 assists in 198 games since his professional debut in 2007.

Despite adding the Japan international to their ranks, reports are persisting that United are looking to bring in Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur. The Croatian may be less of a gamble than Kagawa, having four years of Premier League experience, but his record is nowhere near as impressive as the Japan star, boasting just 50 goals and 48 assists in 283 games.

The rumours may be swirling that a move for the 26-year-old Spurs is imminent, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson, undoubtedly, prepared to spend big in order to oust Manchester City from their recently acquired throne. But, is Modric really necessary? United boast a contingent of fine midfields – Tom Cleverly, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes, despite his age, to name just three.

Adding Kagawa to this and the replacement for when the latter retires is all but sown up. In the 23-year-old, the Red Devils have a player that has an unrivalled passing accuracy, whilst his exploits in front of goal are evident earlier in the article. Adding Modric to this, and United have, potentially, brought in a player of similar style to their recent signing. The money that would be used to sign the Spurs ace could be best served elsewhere in improving the squad.
