Hughes happy with Accrington stay

Accrington Stanley midfielder Bryan Hughes has affirmed his desire to remain with the League Two side beyond the end of the season.

The 35-year-old joined the club back in October after a short stint with Icelandic outfit IBV Vestmannaeyjar over the summer.

Reports have suggested that Hughes won’t be offered a new deal with Stanley once the campaign ends next month.

And despite speculation linking Hughes with a move away from the Crown Ground, the former Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic star insists he would be happy to remain with Accrington Stanley.

“I would love to stay beyond the summer,” he said.

“Paul Cook came in (in February) and has new ideas for next season, so I will have to wait and see if I feature in his plans.

“I have really enjoyed my time with Accrington Stanley and had a great time with the club.”

Hughes went on to say his experience from his time in the Premiership aided the League Two sides’ campaign, and for a brief period, when he was first team coach.

“Definitely. I felt as though the team went from strength to strength across the season,” he added when quizzed if experience was key to the club.

And although Hughes admits he would prefer to continue his career in England, he wouldn’t be adverse to the idea of continuing his football abroad.

 “I would prefer to remain in England and I feel as though I can still perform at a high level,” said Hughes.

“I’m not against the idea of playing abroad again, having spent time in Iceland over the summer to regain my fitness following injury.

“I really enjoyed the experience having worked hard whilst everyone else was enjoying their time off in the close season.”
