Dortmund: The dark horses of Europe

It’s fair to say that the Bundesliga has been making a steady rise back to the furore of European football. The state of German football at present is the highest it has been for some time now, with the Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the forefront of this.

The latter in particular have been extremely impressive in the Champions League this season. Their victory over Manchester City on Tuesday night ensured Dortmund secured top spot in Group D, while also seeing them go throughout the group stage unbeaten.

There form domestically may be suffering – they currently find themselves 11 points behind Bundesliga pace setters Bayern following the 1-1 draw between each other on Saturday – but the performances on the continent has seen a number of football fans take Die Schwarzgelben to heart.

Dropping points just twice, away at City in a game they deserved to win and at home to Real Madrid, has seen Dortmund rise significantly towards the top of the favourites pile to lift the trophy in May – the first time they could since their 3-1 win over Juventus back in 1997.

With the likes of Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus to name four stars available to Jurgen Klopp, it’s no shock that Dortmund are performing so superbly this season in Europe. If they continue their current form, there is no reason why the German side can find themselves competing for the trophy come May.
