Bentley needs to leave Spurs (Video)

Ask any Tottenham Hotspur who they want to see sold in January and a vast majority will respond with David Bentley. The winger hasn’t lit up the bright lights around White Hart Lane as many had expected following his big money move from Blackburn Rovers in 2008.

Three loan spells away at Birmingham City, West Ham United and more recently FC Rostov, where he currently plies his trade, the 28-year-old is expected to depart the club next month, with his name once again popping into the heads of fans following his time in Russia.

However, with his move set to come to an end shortly, a return to Spurs is believed to be out of the question, with head coach Andre Villas-Boas currently overstocked with midfielders. A long overdue exit is mooted, with Bentley himself admitting he has enjoyed his time with Rostov and that he wants to continue playing, be it with the North London club or elsewhere.

For the good of the player, a move away from Spurs is essential. At 28, the former Blackburn star still has plenty to offer in football, just not in Villas-Boas’ side. His talent is still evident, even if the self-proclaimed ‘New David Beckham’ hasn’t lived up to his hype, with a mid-table Premiership or top Championship side a suitable destination for Bentley.
