It’s time to introduce safe standing

Friction between fans come often become heated at football when one insists on standing, while the other would prefer to remain seated to watch the ensuing action. Unsurprisingly, many a stadia across England have adopted a no nonsense approach to standing at football matches, with the incidents at Hillsborough in 1989 still in the memory of those that were affected that day.

Since then, it was mandatory for teams to bring seating into stadiums and ban supporters from standing in order to avoid the harrowing disaster from ever occurring again. However, as the years have rolled by and stadiums have become more and more secure to the point that a fan can’t swear without being given a slap on the wrist, some have called upon the introduction of safe standing areas.

The Football Supporters’ Federation (FSF) was today looking to receive the backing of MP’s as they look to bring in small scale trials at Premier League clubs, with clubs across England and the Scottish Premier League backing the pilot scheme. It would adopt a similar stance to that of the Bundesliga, which currently promotes the idea with no major casualties reported from Germany since its introduction.

Either way, fans appear to be behind the idea, especially with a majority often keen to watch the game while standing. You only have to go to any stadium across the country and see the vast amount of away fans on their feet throughout the 90 minutes of action.
