Premier League talking points: six weeks in

It's good to have it back isn't it? Even with the European Championships this summer I still found myself craving the drama and excitement of the Premier League. So, how's it all looking after six weeks and six games in? Well, one thing we still know for sure; John Terry is still a loathsome moron who no one likes with a reputation that is now, if it wasn't before, irrecovably tarnished. Gutted mate.

The big surprise so far has to be Everton. David Moyes has got his team playing excellent football and the tone was set with that brilliant victory over Manchester United on the opening Monday night. Marouane Fellani, he of the largest hair in the league, has emerged as their outstanding performer and developed into the dominate midfielder he always threatened to be.

Have Arsenal's defensive problems truly been sorted out by Steve Bould? There were promising signs after the first four games but the recent showing against Chelsea shows that they are still prone to conceding goals from set pieces that reflects a lack of organisation between the centre backs. Are they possible dark horses for the tite? Maybe, but it hinges on injuries and whether or not they can remain defensively solid throughout the course of the season.

The Manchester clubs have both been leaking goals but, thankfully for them, have still been scoring goals which has enabled them to remain close to the top of the table. With their expensive squads they will be onvious contenders but if they continue to put in shoddy defensive performances than they will be watching Chelsea run away with league.

Chelsea, though, don't look as though they have fully hit their stride. Fernando Torres has improved, certainly, but di Matteo will need another striker to supplant the Spainard to turn Chelsea into a formidable, dominant force. The top of the table is very open at the moment but Chelsea have opened up a small lead and just pushed their heads forward early in the title race.

I bet Brendan Rodgers has not been enjoying his first couple of months on the job. What a tumultuous start to the season it has been for Liverpool where everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong. Unable to notch up their first win until this past weekend against Norwich and hints of rift between Rodgers and the American owners, Liverpool fans will be glad to see the back of this rough period. Things won't improve unless the squad is invested in come January time as the lack of striker will tell and they will suffer as a result.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Norwich will endure a very long and trying season. It is peculiar because they have, if anything, a better squad than last year when they were so impressive under Paul Lambert. With Lambert gone to Villa now, it appears Chris Houghton cannot get the same group of players to perform as they did with Lambert. Not helping the cause is Grant Holt's apparent lack of fitness and missing form. Holt was vital to Norwich's first season in the league and they will need him if they are to survive a fight for survival.

Wigan, as usual, won't start playing until the pressure is really on and they need to sort themselves out of a real mess. So, that will be April/May time then. Newcastle have been disappointing but, incredibly, Alan Pardew and his staff have been offered an eight year contract that will keep them with the club until 2020. Well done, Pardew, but you're still the most boring manager in the league.

I will hold back from making predictions as we are only at six games in but the good news for us fans is that it is shaping up to be just as exciting as last season.
