Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Diego Sosa

    8. Diego Sosa

With most of the O.G’s we have seen, you can argue a case for understanding what they were trying to do. Put the ball behind them, out of danger, away from the attackers etc. However, if anyone can explain what Diego was trying to do here, then I’d love to hear from them. A great finish, but at the wrong end, again.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Franck Queudrue

    10. Franck Queudrue.

Most of you will know Franck from his successful spells in the Premier League with Birmingham and Middlesbrough, but he also ’enjoyed’ a spell in France, with RC Lens. He kept to the golden rule of defending of, ’If in doubt, put your foot through it’ unfortunately, nobody told Franck which way they were shooting….

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Chris Brass

    9. Chris Brass

You type Chris Brass anywhere, and you will only find this goal, a hundred times over. Some players recovered from their nightmare moments, some never made it far. A favourite on blooper DVDs around the world, some own goals are a real kick in the crown jewels, this one, was quite literally, a kick in the face.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Jamie Pollock

    7. Jamie Pollock

We took several factors into consideration selecting this top ten, and this one ticked all the boxes. Again, we can try to see what Pollock was trying to do here, and it wasn’t trying to create Gazza’s goal versus Scotland, but unfortunately for Man City fans, this turned out to be a massive blooper, albeit, a fantastically controlled one.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Mike Elwood

    6. Mike Elwood.

Who? You may ask. Well, as you can see, not exactly a record attendance saw the Mervue United players own goal, but those that did, probably witnessed one of the more painful and unfortunate ones. 30 yard headers are pretty rare, and this, is a once in a lifetime achievement.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Lee Dixon

    5. Lee Dixon

One of the more famous names in our top ten, what does Lee Dixon share with Ronaldinho? A birthday? A barber? Certainly not. it’s the ability to leave David Seaman helpless with a 30 yard lob. The problem of course, is that Dixon is meant to be on the same team…

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Peter Enckleman

    4. Peter Enckleman

There is no decent time to score an own goal, but which is the worst? A cup final? Against your former club? Or in a high-intensity, second city derby, where bragging rights are rife? Birmingham once enjoyed domination of the second city, and a lot was down to some horrendous goalkeeping. Great respect to the ‘keeper for ignoring the taunts though.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Inigo Martinez

    3. Inigo Martinez

Youngsters can be suspect to some rash defending, and goalkeeper David De Gea is known for some high-profile errors. However, the Man Utd goally certainly wasn’t to blame here, as his young centre-back skilfully lobs him from 25 yards. Luckily they were leading 6-0 at the time.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Festus Baise

    2. Festus Baise

Some efforts are worth hiding away from, some are worth celebrating anyway. This one is definitely the latter. Only god knows what Festus was trying to do when he flung himself at this ball, but you can almost guarantee that you won’t see another own goal like this one. Take a bow.

Top Ten Own Goal Howlers - Gary Sprake

    1. Gary Sprake

Putting a new spin on goalkeeping phrases such as “The ball is like a magnet to him” and “It sticks to his gloves like glue” Farsley Celtic stopper Sprake took the meaning a bit too literally, as he failed to let go of this throw-out in time, only to see the ball fly in off the near post. Safe hands.
