    Top6 - Number 3: Nicolas Anelka

    When: Summer 2002

What happened: After 22 appearances and 5 goals during a successful loan spell from PSG, Liverpool had the option to make the deal permanent and sign the prolific forward. Instead, Gerard Houllier opted to spend £10m on the fore-mentioned Diouf. Houllier’s Liverpool had finished the season before in second place and never recovered from a terrible summer of signings.

What could have been: There would have been no serial-spitter Diouf at Anfield and Anelka, rather than smashing them in for Chelsea, would have done so at Anfield.
