Newcastle face fight for full-back

Newcastle United have initiated a transfer battle with Paris St Germain for Ajax right-back Gregory Van Der Wiel.

The Magpies seem to have abandoned thier futile pursuit of Lille's Martin Debuchy and have instead focused their intentions on the Dutch defender after agent Mino Raiola announced he was trying to negotiate a route out of Ajax for his man.

Big-spending PSG are favourites to make the 24 year old their latest acquisition in a busy summer, but Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, rumoured to be keeping an eye on Van Der Wiel, will be buoyed by the news of a possible Ajax departure for his target.
