Cardiff eye up former Liverpool man

It has been reported in the Metro today that newly promoted Cardiff City will look to bring former Liverpool attacker Dirk Kuyt back to the Premiership just one year after departing to Fenerbahçe. The 32-year-old Kuyt left for Turkey In June of last year for a fee of £1 million pounds, and has enjoyed a fairly good first season with the Europa league semi-finalists making 27 appearances and netting seven times.

Cardiff believe that despite his age Dirk Kuyt will still possess enough of his trademark energy and can use his experience to do a job in the Premier league next year. If he were to make the switch he would also be linking back up with Craig Bellamy who was also at Liverpool with Dirk Kuyt. Sources in Turkey suggest that he could be allowed to leave Fenerbahçe for much less than the one million the Turkish side paid for him.

Kuyt’s tireless running and willingness to chase down anything combined with his positional nous to be in the right place at the right time made him a cult hero at Anfield. He scored 51 goals in just over 200 games for Liverpool including several very important goals, one of those against Cardiff in the League cup final in February of 2012.

The Bluebirds have a reported transfer budget of £25 million as they prepare for life in the top flight for the first time in their history but bosses at the club say they plan to be as careful with their money as possible as they look for bargains.

Although it is still early and it’s unsure whether Kuyt will be willing to leave Turkey, the Championship winners are the only team reported to be interested in the Dutch international. Kuyt fits the ideology of looking for cut price players that possess Premier league quality, and should the deal go through Cardiff will be hoping that the player can bring important goals to the Welsh club as they look to survive their first season in the Premiership.
