      Sir Bobby Charlton: Rooney's staying

I think the general consensus among United fans will be one of relief upon the repeated assurances from both United's manager Alex Ferguson and - more recently - Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, that Wayne Rooney will be going nowhere this summer. The England striker has performed reasonably well this season, although his 15 goals in all competitions so far have failed to live up to the heights of last year's 34 goals in all competitions. A major factor in his splendid achievement last season going without much praise, and his lack of goals in comparison this season, has been a certain Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman's extraordinary 37 goals in all competitions last season stole Rooney's spotlight, and since his move to Manchester United, Rooney's role has become one of support, rather than goalscoring. He remains, however, one of United's best players, and his benching for the United - Madrid second leg was a huge surprise (although a strictly tactical decision, according to Sir Alex Ferguson). While the Red Devils have a new, arguably better prolific goalscorer, Wayne's new role benefits the team greatly, and getting rid of a man heralded as 'a great player' by THE Sir Bobby Charlton, is not the wisest of decisions to make. So all in all, it seems unlikely that we will see much of a change up top for United next season.
