Liverpool looking to Walcott to add width

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing England's Theo Walcott as manager Brendan Rogers looks to add some width to his Anfield charges. Great news? Well, maybe for Arsenal.

When Walcott arrived at Arsenal, so much was expected from him. His pace was frightening and he looked to have the foundations on which Arsene Wenger would be able to build him into one of the most feared wingers in the world.

Fast forward six years and how much improvement can we say we can see? You only have to look at his expression after his goal against Sweden in the European Championships to really assess his lack of progression. The look of pure surprise on his face after he pulled England level was not befitting of a player who oozes confidence, who believed he was were he belonged. Maybe he was just showing how shocked he was that people still believed in him?

Walcott, now 23, was absurdly taken to the 2006 World Cup by Sven Goran Eriksson on the advice of Arsene Wenger who apparently thought the 17 year old was ready to take on the best players in the world on the biggest stage of them all but wasn’t convinced enough himself to give him a start in his precious Arsenal team. And I don't buy the 'it was for his experience' argument. He took up one of the places of someone who could have made a difference.

Why Rogers would want to risk buying Theo is beyond me. Ofcourse Theo could go on to have a great season and is young enough to prove me wrong. He can play abit. But the six years that Arsenal have invested in him would be wasted if they were to sell him now. His pace is a valuable asset, but he doesn't have a football brain. He often panics when his pace gets him into dangerous positions. Defenders only need step back and watch him cross/shot the ball into the hands of a waiting steward.

For the past 3 pre seasons I hear experts saying that the up coming season is make or break for Walcott. Same again then.
