Carr not out of petrol just yet

The Carr may not have run out of petrol just yet… that’s according to Birmingham City manager Chris Hughton who believes the defender may be not be calling time on a career that has spanned an incredible 19 years.

Stephen Carr appears to be on his last legs due to a knee injury that may keep him out of action for the remainder of the season meaning he may have played his last game for the midlands outfit and perhaps in professional football altogether.

However just when those thought they’ve seen the last of the old motor, Carr appears to cruising towards a new contract with Hughton’s latest comments giving the full-back hope of a return next season even if it is in the Premier League with Birmingham.

The captain at St Andrews whose contract expires at the end of the season was widely tipped to retire in the summer but Hughton has given the biggest indicator yet that Carr’s playing days may not be over just yet.

“Stephen wants to play, he hates not playing, he hates not training," Hughton told SkySports

"As we've seen, certainly in the good periods he's had this season, he's a very, very fit lad, I'm quite sure he'll want to play as long as possible."

"We've got a few players, three in particular (Carr, David Murphy and Colin Doyle), whose contracts will be up at the end of the season and we're assessing.

"The only reason they've been put on the back burner a little bit is because of where we are and our strive to get into the play-offs and, more so, to get back into the Premier League."

Carr retired in 2008 but was persuaded to return to football just two months later when Birmingham came calling.
