Rodgers eyes Di Santo swoop

The Daily Mirror report that Liverpool are looking to make the latest in a long line of disappointing and predictable transfers. Wigan forward Franco Di Santo is apparently on the reds radar after an impressive start to the season earned him a call up to the Argentinian national side, well, I say impressive, he’s scored three in ten this season as opposed to seven in 33 last season. Vast improvements.
Ok, I’ll admit that Di Santo has looked slightly less hopeless than usual for the Latics this season but if there is one thing Liverpool don’t need it’s a forward with a disappointing goalscoring record who often flatters to deceive. After all, their poised to snap up Daniel Sturridge.
It seems that the rumour is stemming from Brendan Rodgers previous involvement with the 23-year-old whilst working with the Chelsea youth set up. Di Santo moved to Chelsea as a youngster but was unable to find the net for the senior side. He was loaned out to Blackburn before transferring permanently to DW where he has maintained his underwhelming goal-scoring record.
If Di Santo moves to Anfield it will be the third player Rodgers has previously worked with and then signed for the reds and seems to show something of a lack of imagination from the ex-Swansea boss. If his ‘philosophy’ if worth continuing with surely Rodgers is able to teach his methods to existing Liverpool players or better value acquisitions than the £15m Joe Allen or the £12m Fabio Borini. The signing of a striker who has scored 12 goals in 111 games in English football, and at 23, should be coming towards something like his peak years, is not the mark of a top four challenging team, it would be another reinforcement of Liverpool’s mid-table status.
