Spanish midfielder set for Premier League return?

Many Liverpool fans still pine for the man and believe the day he was allowed to depart Anfield by Rafa Benitez was the day that Liverpool as we know it descended into the one it is now.

But, could there be a silver lining as today's Mirror is reporting that Xabi Alonso could be set to return to the Premier League from Real Madrid. Alonso's current contract expires in 2014 but at the age of 30, the Madrid hierarchy are reluctant to offer him a long-term deal, leaving the Spanish World Cup and twice European Championship winner looking for offers elsewhere.

Sorry to say it Liverpool fans, but I think Alonso may be looking at a higher calling than Brendan Rodgers' "new era" on Merseyside.

      Famous last words.
