Where will Downing be after the transfer window?

He hasn’t really fitted in at Liverpool and has been played out of position at times notably on Thursday he was filling in at left back. So Stewart Downing may have a sense of uncertainty over his future in Merseyside.

The manager of his former club Tony Mowbray has hinted that he may be interested in signing Downing back to his former club Middlesbrough.

On the other hand Mowbray feels that he won’t realistically be able to sign the Liverpool man. At this moment in time Mowbray isn’t focused on Downing and refuses to comment about it, but deep down really, he wouldn’t mind Downing back at Middlesbrough but would Downing be willing to down a division into the Championship in search of first team football.

The fact that Middlesbrough has a minimal amount of money to spend on players if a Premier league club is interested in Downing and Liverpool are willing to sell the Boro are likely to miss out. That is why Mowbray isn’t talking too much about wanting Downing as he knows the club hasn’t the financial power to compete against those in higher divisions.

When he was at Middlesbrough Downing made over 200 appearances for his local club and left in 2009 when Aston Villa came in for the Englishmen.
