Lucas Linked With Reds Exit - Why The Brazilian Midfielder Could Be Sold

It is now seven years since Lucas Leiva left his home country of Brazil to join Liverpool.  Despite seeming to have been around forever, the midfielder is still only 27 years of age and has plenty more of his career to see out.  According to the Express, though, the Brazilian may not be doing that at Anfield.

The Reds are reportedly willing to sell Lucas in order to help fund a move for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren.  The Saints centre-back has already stated his desire to move to Anfield and Brendan Rodgers is believed to be keen on completing a deal to sign him.  If Liverpool are able to receive a decent fee for Lucas then they could put that money towards their pursuit of Lovren.

A Brazil international, Lucas’ country probably could have done with his defensive qualities at this summer’s World Cup.  He is someone who still has plenty to offer and many sides across Europe would be interested in having him.  The man who brought the player to Anfield, and who also fiercely defended him from criticism at one point, Rafael Benitez, is rumoured to be considering a move.  His club Napoli and Serie A rivals Inter Milan have both been linked with Lucas, who could well adapt easily to the slower pace of the Italian game.

Liverpool managed to have their most successful season in years last campaign despite Lucas struggling with injury for a lot of it.  With that said, it was noticeable when he was missing, as they often lacked a bit of defensive grit without him.

If the coming of age of Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson means Lucas will no longer be a regular starter for the Reds, his departure could well be on the cards.
