Could Vertonghen's Potential Spurs Departure See The Return Of Steven Caulker?

According to reports from the Guardian, Tottenham are exploring the possibility of re-signing Steven Caulker in the summer – just 12 months after selling him to Cardiff for £9 million.

With the Welsh outfit facing relegation back to the Championship this season, Spurs boss Tim Sherwood is keen to bring the Englishman back to White Hart Lane.

Caulker has captained Cardiff throughout the season and he has been instrumental in the limited success that his new side has experienced.

It is well noted that Sherwood is a big fan of the powerful defender. It was him after all, in his role developing the White Hart Lane club's young players, who made the case for Caulker to be more heavily integrated into the first team.

However, under the Andre Villas Boas regime he was deemed surplus to requirements and on the arrival of Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest he was shipped out of the Portuguese manager’s set-up.

This move could see considerable changes within the Spurs defence during the summer months. Especially considering Tim Sherwood has doubts over the future of two of his current centre-halves, with Jan Vertonghen having attracted the interest of Barcelona and Younès Kaboul set to become a free agent.

Vertonghen will indefinitely need replacing. Despite concerns regarding his attitude, the Belgian continues to prove himself as an outstanding defensive talent.

Caulker would be the perfect man to fill the void left by the Belgian, returning to the club he really should never have left.
