Spurs Winger Should Be Going To Brazil Despite Struggling To Command A Regular Starting Slot

Andros Townsend has urged Spurs boss Tim Sherwood to play him on a regualr basis ahead of the World Cup this summer. Townsend has not played a full 90 minutes since returning from injury back in February, but here's why he should go to Rio regardless.

His performances in an England shirt have been very promising, playing a key role in the vital qualifying victories over Montenegro and Poland and arguably being man of the match in both games.

Roy Hodgson used the tricky winger on both flanks, but it's the left hand side where he is suited most, using his blistering pace to take on full-back's and cross the ball into dangerous areas. Townsend also has the ability to play on the right and come inside to link with the attackers.

I agree that Townsend needs to get some valuable playing time before Brazil, but it would be a ludicrous decision not to take a player that could be a permanent fixture in the starting eleven for the next three, possibly four major championship's.

Townsend, of course, faces stiff competition from the likes of Raheem Sterling, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jay Rodriguez, but a combination of Chamberlain and Townsend on the flanks will provide much needed energy and creativity that England have lacked in recent years.

We need to rebuild at this World Cup and if we can bring the likes of Townsend into the frame, we can produce a solid platform for the next Euro's in 2016.
