Chelsea To Sign Striker, But Should Lukaku Be Leading The Line? The Statistics

With news coming in from BBC that Chelsea are on the verge of completing a deal for former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o, it's left me bemused as to why Romelu Lukaku is not the Blues' main man up top. Here's my case for the Belgium international.

Last season he spent his time at West Brom and he was a massive hit. The quality he exuded for such a young talent was admirable, and his powerful forward play really put his name on the Premier League map.

He played 35 league games for the Baggies, scoring 17 goals and creating 36 chances. His shot accuracy stood at 66%, which is an impressive figure. In fact, it bettered everyone in the Chelsea squad last season, minus Ryan Bertrand who mustered just four shots in his 19 appearances.

Lukaku is a bullish forward in the Didier Drogba ilk and is nothing like anyone else at the club. While Fernando Torres looks to drop deep and use his movement to exploit the defence, and Demba Ba uses his strength in the air, Lukaku is happy to bulldoze his way around the frontline and put the defenders on the back foot.

This season he has made two substitute appearances for the Blues, and although he's had just one shot this season, he's won 50% of his duels and completed 81% of his passes.

For me, the 20-year-old should be leading the line at Stamford Bridge.
