Arsenal Could Bid Up To £65m For Premier League Quartet, But Does It Suggest Desperation?

After missing out on a host of summer signings, Arsene Wenger seems to be ready for his last throw of the dice. Luis Suarez, David Villa and Gonzalo Higuain are all said to have turned Arsenal down over the last few months, but the Daily Star are reporting that he is ready to spend almost £65m on four new signings.

A £12m bid for Yohan Cabaye was received by Newcastle last week but was quickly laughed at, and the other trio are said to be Manchester City's Micah Richards and Swansea pair Michu and Ashley Williams.

But does this prove that the Frenchman is beginning to crack?

Arsenal were beaten 1-3 by Aston Villa on the opening day of the season in what was an embarrassing performance. Although they took the lead after 12 minutes, the Midlands club ripped them apart thereafter.

Wenger has never been one to spend big, we know that. But it now seems as though players are looking over the north London club as they're without a trophy in the last seven years.

Williams would certainly strengthen a wobbly backline, and Cabaye would be a welcome addition to an-already sturdy midriff, but they are 28 and 27 respectively. Michu could well be the goal-getter they have been after and Richards has experience at the very top, but the former has only had one season in the topflight and the latter has been injured for a lot of his career.

Whether the moves would work out or not is a different matter, but throwing all his eggs into one basket would only shift the fans off Wenger's back for a short while.

He has lost their confidence, and that is a huge part of being charge at a football club.

Jamie Carragher summed this whole debacle up nicely on Monday Night Football this week, saying: "The only ones over-spending at Arsenal are the fans."

    What do you reckon Gooners?
