Tottenham focus their attentions to Belgian influence

Tottenham officials have moved quickly to deny the rumour that any Spurs fan without a curly Poirot moustache would be refused entry to White Hart Lane next season, this news will particularly please female supporters of the north London club.

Apparently there is also no truth in speculation that the only alcohol in the ground on match days would be Stella and the only food served Brussels sprouts.

Do you see where I’m going with this?

The Premier League’s current allure to all things Belgian is apparently being taken to whole new level by the Lilywhites.

Not content with having two of the current Belgium national team in their ranks, in the form of Mousa Dembele and Jan Vertonghen, they are now being strongly linked with bids for Christian Benteke and Nacer Chadli.

The apparent fixation is further emphasised by the fact that another player supposedly coveted by the club is Ghanaian full back Daniel Opare; he plays for Standard Liege in the Belgian League.

Don’t get me wrong, all three prospective signings have ability and could potentially add quality to the Spurs squad in their latest bid for Champions League football.

You would however like to think that the moves aren’t just being made because Belgian football is currently in vogue.

To be fair to Tottenham, London rivals Chelsea appear to have a similar attraction to all things Belgium football related.

They currently boast five internationals on their books, the chances of any of them other than Eden Hazard and possibly Thibaut Courtois nailing down a first team spot at Stamford Bridge however seem remote.

The players that Spurs look to have identified appear destined immediately for first team action and international understanding can of course greatly benefit a side at club level.

This has been demonstrated many times in recent years, notably the Dutch trio that played for AC Milan, and closer to home Spurs great foe Arsenal with their French contingent during the glory years under Arsene Wenger.

Spurs fans will hope that their clubs concentration on a particular nation may yield similar successes.
