Can Liverpool make a late surge for the top four?

It was an encounter that Liverpool, arguably, dominated from the first minute to the last. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, Manchester City still secured a point in the 2-2 draw between the two sides at the Etihad Stadium, with Pepe Reina to blame for the result, the Spaniard making his eighth mistake that has led to a goal since the beginning of the 2011/12 season.

Nevertheless, the Reds still showcased their capability in stunning fashion away at the home of the Premier League champions, with January arrival Sturridge galvanising the Merseyside outfit after a somewhat slow start to the campaign.

It's led to suggestions that Liverpool could make a late surge for a top four finish and with it, return to the Champions League. The club may be nine points of fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur, but it's surely a possibility that the club can make a late surge for a place in Europe's elite competition.

Steven Gerrard talked up the chances of a securing a top four finish following the 2-2 draw with City on Sunday and he has every right to do so. If the likes of Reina can cut out the silly mistakes that have cost the club points in the past, then a Champions League place can most certainly be secured by Liverpool, especially with a number of teams around them faltering at present.
